Galerie Obrist was founded in 2000 by the art historian Torsten Obrist and has since become an innovative exhibition space among the leading galleries for contemporary art in the Ruhr area. Located near Essen’s Folkwang Museum and right across the street from the building where Rudolf Zwirner founded his first gallery in 1959, the gallery presents young and contemporary positions, artistically precise and on an international level. The spectrum covers classical media such as painting, sculpture and photography as well as video and installation by well-established positions and young emerging artists on the market. At the core of the gallery’s work is the direct and longterm cooperation with the artists – in continuous group and solo exhibitions, with catalogue and book publications and at national and international art fairs. The gallery regularly participates in fairs in Germany, Canada, Russia, Switzerland and the US and is a member of the Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien.
